In its effort to raise awareness to make a person with disability Inclusive Society, a Freedom Walk for persons with disabilities is organized to express concerns on their rights to a barrier free society on June 29 at the Bonifacio Commercial Complex in Taguig City.
More than 1,500 participants will join this year’s Freedom Walk composed of persons with disabilities, officials from the national government agencies and local government units of the national capital region, leaders and members of the disabled people’s organizations and the civil society.
Led by the Alyansa ng Mga Maykapansanang Pinoy (AKAP-Pinoy) and chaired by the Philippine Association of Children with Developmental and Learning Disabilities, (PACDLD) Inc., this year’s theme, “Each Right-full Step We Take, All Barriers We Break” focuses on the progressive realization of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN-CRPD) which marks the paradigm shift in attitudes from viewing persons with disabilities as objects of charity to a person capable of claiming their rights in all aspects of human endeavors. Further, the adoption of the Incheon Framework and for the government to implement its Strategies in order to achieve its set Goals to Make the Rights Real for Persons with Disability in Asia and Pacific, 2013-2022 will increase the inclusion and/or full participation of persons with disabilities.
Taguig City Mayor Maria Laarni Cayetano will be the guest speaker and host of this year’s Freedom Walk. Likewise, Commissioner Grace Padaca of the Comelec and Acting Executive Director Carmen Reyes-Zubiaga of the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) will give Inspirational Messages.
Other participants include among others the Federation of the Disabled of Taguig City and its Band, Autism Society Philippines (ASP), Mandaluyong City Drum and Lyre and the Promoting Ryders with Disabilities on the Road Safety Program and Marshalls of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), Department of Social Welfare and Development-NCR (DSWD), House of Representatives(HOR), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) – PWD Sector, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Manila International Airport Authority, Local Government Units of National Capital Region, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), NCDA, Congressman Alfred Vargas, SM Cares, Tahanang Walang Hagdanan (TWH), Women with Disabilities Leap to Economic and Social Progress (WOW Leap), Physicians for Peace, Cerebral Palsied Association of the Philippines (CPAP), Philippine Blind Union, Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled, VIBES, CALL Foundation and Philippine Academy of the Rehabilitation Medicine (PARM).
