Persons with disabilities (PWDs), just like any other citizens could be potential contributors to our country’s economic growth progress. Therefore, in business, they could either be owners or customers. As customers, it is often uncomfortable or confusing for business frontliners, if their staff do not have enough knowledge and skills in handling customers with special needs. But for Ortigas Company who owns shopping malls in Tiendesitas, Pasig City, sensitivity to the needs of customers with disabilities is one of their top priorities.
Last May 7 and 9, 2014, the OCLP Holdings, Inc., an Ortigas Company conducted two batches of Orientation on Disability through presentations and actual demonstrations for at least 200 security guards, utility workers, and other employees in sync with the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), Circle of Friends Foundation, Inc. and University of the Philippines. After welcoming the guests and resource persons, OHI Shopping Center Division GM Ms. Cathy Casares Ko, Tiendesitas Focal Person for PWDs, Ms. Monaliza V. Lauraya went over the activity’s objectives.
NCDA as the lead government agency on disability played an important role in providing deep understanding on various types of disability, including local laws promoting the rights of PWDs as follows: Batas Pambansa Blg. 344 known as “Accessibility Law”, Magna Carta for the Disabled Persons or RA 7277 and Republic Act 9442, an Act Amending RA 7277. The sessions also emphasized the proper way to handle, treat or assist persons with disabilities, as well as being sensitive to their needs.
