The National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) announces the celebration of Women with Disabilities Day (March 25) through the “Launching of PWD-Friendly Pedestrian Crossings and “Trainers’ Training of Women with Disabilities on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.”
According to NCDA Acting Executive Director Carmen R. Zubiaga, the Day’s celebration is pursuant to Proclamation No. 744 which declares the last Monday of March of every year as Women with Disabilities Day.
Director Zubiaga said that with this year’s theme “Babaeng Maykapansan, Kasama Ka Sa Tuwid Na Daan,” the event aims to highlight the participation of women with disabilities in the society, not as objects of charity and services, but as equal partners in development.
Director Zubiaga added that “the event also recognizes the role of women with disabilities as frontline advocates of their varying concerns and that of persons with disabilities in general, such as accessibility and disaster preparedness, among others.”
The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), this year’s chair of the event’s Technical Working Committee, will spearhead the launching of the pwd-friendly pedestrian crossings on March 22.
On the other hand, women with disabilities and focal persons on disaster risk reduction and management programs of the local government units of the National Capital Region (NCR) and the province of Rizal will be the participants to the Trainers Training on Inclusion of Women and Children with Disabilities in Disaster Risk and Reduction Management on March 24 to be held at Tahanang Walang Hagdanan in Cainta, Rizal.
